Brief Outline

Arunachal Pradesh having a geographical area of 83, 743 Sq. KM is endowed with diverse agro-climatic zones ranging from tropical to temperate with altitude variations ranging from 60 metres to 5000 metres with varied soil type and sufficient rainfall with fresh cover and undulating terrain ideal for growing various fruit crops of sub-tropical to temperate habitats. In spite of these favourable natural conditions, the horticulture development has not gained momentum. Therefore, felt need is to exploit the potential in a scientific and systematic way to generate the sustained level of income and employment opportunity.

Scattered attempts as followed till now have not yielded desired results due to inadequate infrastructural support, lack of research based technology suitable to local condition shortage of trained manpower, poor socio-economic condition of local farmers, post harvest management etc.

Hence, for sustainable development of the to alleviate poverty level and exploit the potential of the region in a systematic manner, central Govt. has launched an integrated horticulture development mission programme in the North-Eastern region.

This technology mission has been divided into 4(four) mini missions where the state department is entrusted mainly with area expansion services.

Due to its varied agro-climatic condition, the district is ideal for growing temperate crops like apple, walnut, kiwi, etc to sub-tropical crops like litchi, orange, banana etc. including vegetable, spices, medicinal floriculture, mushroom and aromatic plants.
